Losing a mother is devastating, no matter what your age; whether you are used to being on your own or still dependent on her for nearly all things in almost all instances. The relationship between a mother and her children is very special and unique; when it is broken by death people experience one of the hardest and most painful types of grief. If you are coping with the death of a mother, work through your grief and suffering and take comfort in these helpful tips.

Get Support from Other Relatives

Even though everyone’s bond with their mom was different from the rest, there are other relatives who are mourning the loss with you. Try to approach those family members, particularly your siblings during this moment of sorrow. These times can truly help people to know how important family is and that no relationship must be ignored. Show your relatives support and compassion during this moment and with anticipation they will return you the favor and loving action.

Get Strength and Comfort in Keepsakes

When a mother dies, we tend to feel both upset and abandoned. People normally cling to things that remind them of their mother as a way to hold onto her for as long as possible. Go through your stuff and choose keepsakes from your childhood that remindyou of your beloved mother. It could be a portrait, a very special present she gave to you, or any other thing like clothing and jewelry. Hold on to these valued keepsakes and take comfort in them, when you are missing your mom the most.

Grief counseling is a form of psychotherapy that helps people cope with loss (Wikipedia). This loss can be the death of a loved one or even a divorce. There’s usually a sense of terrible sadness and yearning, and the process can be very long and very painful. However, if counseling is undertaken, it can help speed up the grieving process. Counseling enables people to understand their feelings, allows them to see beyond their pain and helps them to finally reach their end goal: acceptance.

The stages of grief

According to GoodTherapy.org, it’s generally believed that grief has four stages, namely denial, anger, bargaining, depression and, finally, acceptance. However, people in the grieving process often switch between these stages, as they’re not fixed. For example, someone may feel “normal” on one day and then be angry the next (GoodTherapy.org). The experience of grieving is often so painful, that a feeling of numbness is common, which sometimes leads to depression (TheLightBeyond.com). Counseling can be helpful during this stage, as the depression can be severe.
